About Medjugorje:
Sometimes it is hard to believe that Medugorje isn’t a Croatia’s attraction.
Almost everybody visiting Medugorje do it on their tour trough Croatia.
It is fascinating how this tiny village in the middle of Herzegovina became second-largest Roman Catholic pilgrimage.
It is well known this is the site of appearance of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
The parish of Medugorje is 25km south-west from Mostar, or coming from Dubrovnik, about 140km, with about 4000 residents living almost entirely thanks to 2000 people a day visiting this place. Their all income are hotels, pensions, shops, restaurants and souvenir stands.
The site of apparition is Podbrdo at a place called Apparition Hill. A steep path leads to the spot where in 1981 a group of teens supposedly saw Virgin Mary.
In 1989 the path was framed with bronze relief representing joyful and sorrowful mysteries of the rosary.
A blue cross marks the foot of the hill and it is there so witnesses of apparition can gather to pray.
There is also St. James Church with twin towers and an outdoor altar for large celebrations and Masses.
This place was declared a holy place thanks to 6 kids to whom Virgin Mary allegedly appeared on June 24th 1981. in Podbrdo.
Virgin Mary conveys the message of peace and tolerance especially in this war-torn area.
