Diocletian’s Palace

Approaching Split by a boat the horizon reveals an amazing sight, the Diocletian’s Palace.

This place takes days to explore properly. It’s the beating heart of the Split. Although, the original architecture wasn’t kept completely, there were some modifications in the Middle Ages, changes made this place even more fascinating, and it only attracted more curious visitors.

The place was built 1700 years ago by emperor Diocletian and it took him 10 years to finish this. Built in lustrous white stone from island Brac, made this structure last forever and attract thousands amazed visitors. And they do have something to admire to. The entire thing is long 215m from east to west side and 181m wide at the southernmost point. The wall are at their highest measure 26m and the entire structure has 31000 sq meters.

On each side of the palace there are gate named after metals, so there are the Golden Gate on the north, south end is sealed with the Bronze Gate, Silver Gate are placed on the eastern end and the Iron Gate are on the west side.

The central street is known for its name Decumanus, Kresimirova, it merges eastern and western gate, but in the past served to separate the imperial residence on the south from the state rooms and temples an the north used by soldiers and servants.

The Bronze Gate led directly to the sea.

Afterwards, there were Mestrovic’s sculptures placed by the Golden and Bronze Gate, so now there we can see bishop Grgur Ninski and Marko Marulic, literary scholar.

Nowadays the palace is home to about 3000 people, you can bump into children playing football, see laundry drying above your head and people on their windows watching action below. Although inside palace is made of  labyrinthine streets, you can’t get lost, each street has got a small sign at the beginning that marks what you can find there: museums, galleries, restaurants, bars, shops, souvenir shops etc.

But make sure you’ve got enough time to explore it.

A little bit about our most popular destination: Makarska Riviera

Makarska Riviera spreads at the foot of the Biokovo Range in length of 50 km. Underneath magnificent Mountain Biokovo with St. Jure its highest top, stretches numerous pebbles beaches with pine trees and olives as shades.

So if your vacation means not only sunbathing and swimming, you can get more on Biokovo Range where you can enjoy active vacation: hiking, climbing, scouting…

Makarska as this regions largest city attracts a lots of tourists especially from the neighboring Bosnia and Herzegovina swarming in July and August.

Makarska offers a lot of fun for young people: bars, beach volleyball, extreme sports at the beach. Or for families with children, exploring the city, ice-cream offering at every corner and clean beaches surrounded with net, so they are safe for swimmers.
All those reasons make Makarska pretty crowded during the summer season, but so quiet out of season.
If you are about to skip Makarska during the summer rush and choose September to visit it, don’t miss exploring Mt. Biokovo, excavations on St. Peter Peninsula that revealed a place called Inaronia served as a way station between Salona and the town of Narona down the coast, both destroyed in 548 by king Totila.

This region was populated by Slavs in 7th century but constantly disturbed by venetian shipping, they sailed into Makarska 887, but that didn’t went as planed and they were forced to pay their right to sail.

In 11th century Croatian-Hungarian kings ruled Makarska, that lasted till 1324 when Bosnian ruler Kotromanic took over. In 1499 the Ottomans took over, fought Venetians and controlled the cost of Adriatic for some time. But a good thing happened during their occupation over 150 years. Makarska became an important port for the salt trade from Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Otomans lasted till 1646 when Venetians finally got their turn. They lasted till 1797, during that time Makarska flourished , new aristocracy built baroque mansions all over the town. After the fall of Venice, several mighty empires changed on the throne of Makarska when it finally became a part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia.
